Virginia Bound!
~Class Supply List~

Please keep in mind that this is a
"scrap quilt" workshop and you are
meant to use your stash! Since our scraps are all different
shapes, lengths and sizes, fabric amounts are guestimates, approximate
yardage is given.
General Supplies needed:
- Sewing machine in working order (including power cords and
extention
cords)
- Thread, scissors, seam ripper, pins and any other notions
you usually
sew with.
- Denim needles for foundation piecing through paper (larger
needles make bigger holes which makes paper removal easy)
- Rotory cutter, mat and ruler.
- 8" or larger square rotory ruler for squaring/trimming blocks
- Also helpful...a second rotory cutter to be used for cutting
paper foundations. (I use my dull blades here!)
- Black narrow tip permanent fabric marker of the "pigma" or
"jelly roll" variety.
- 1 sheet of template plastic. We will be drafting
our blocks to cut a template that will give us each the angle for our
"kite" shape!
- 1 pad of 8.5" X 11" (or larger pad) of artist's tracing
paper. You will need approx 80 sheets. (Can be found at places like
Michaels, AC moore, Hobby Lobby, etc)
- We want the see-through tracing paper because you can see
your markings for fabric placement.
- Fabric glue stick (optional)
- Wooden fabric "iron" for "finger pressing" seams in between
ironing. (I don't think there is enough power or enough outlets for
everyone to have an iron plugged in at their own station.) I've also
seen people use "wall paper seam rollers" for this step!
Fabric supplies:
- This quilt is made of 15" blocks, with each block quarter
finishing at 7.5". The quilt shown finishes approx
77"X91" or a generous "full" size.
You can make the quilt bigger or smaller depending on how many blocks
you make. You can also alter your block size by simply drafting it the
size you want it to be.
The quilt above took approximately 3 yards of light
scraps/strings/strips and 3 yards of dark scraps/strings/strips. You
can do this quilt in a number of ways including:
- One color ie: blue and neutral
- Two complimentary colors ie: green and purple (using one as
your "light" and the other as "dark"
- completely scrappy multicolored on the dark side, and
neutral
- jewel tones for the darks with black/whites for the light
side...
- Anything you want to do can be done!
I made this top completely from the strings and strips I got from
cutting apart 100% cotton men's shirts that I picked up at thrift
stores. I used the collars, cuffs, pockets and plackets and all
the odd leftover pieces of cutting down the shirts in this quilt...the
WHOLE top of the quilt, including the border came from recycled shirts!
One orange shirt (XXL) was enough to do all the orange squares in the
pieced border with a variety of greens, neutrals and blues filling in
the other squares. One red shirt gave me the pieces for the star points
in the 4 corners of the quilt.
You don't need to plan the borders for your quilt until you have your
blocks together. I will include border instructions with the quilt
pattern so you can complete the top on your own. The workshop will
focus on string piecing the blocks!
If you have any questions about the
supply list or instructions, please don't hesitate to call me!
I really
look forward to this workshop with you!
