Tonya's Alphabet!
~Free-Style Letters Primer Page 2~

"Sensational" By Tonya

Here's another happy, positive quilt from my collection. And amazingly enough, yet again, just another photo of the top. Not even the whole top - there should be a couple of borders on here. It was quilted with the obligatory black perle cotton fans.

I made "Sensational" right after "Bricks" back in 2002. It's pieced in a slightly different way than my other letter quilts are, but not so much so that you'd notice it right away. I loved the look and feel of this quilt so much that I made my recent bed quilt with the same colors and black letters. The words read: Sensational, Fantastic, marvelous, wonderful, incredible, magnificent.

Capital L

Capital L is built basically like a half-log cabin block

For the L, cut approx 1 1/2" of  letter fabric and attach to a wide bit of background. Then whack off the extra.

Attach a piece of letter fabric to the left side, and again trim. There's the L. In this photo, I'm also showing the beginning of my U (on the left), cuz yes, it is an L too before the final bit is added. For the UI started with a skinny rectangle of background fabric and added it to my widest width of letter fabric. I point this out to show that even I explain construction one way, there are always other ways to do it. The only important thing is that it looks like the letter you want.

Capitals U and C

This is the U finished, along with a couple of leftover u's  from my last project. The one on the far right has had its height adjusted to whatever it was I was finishing letters off to. Pity the poor brain, it can't even think back that far.

Here is my C and another spare C. C is made the exact same way as the U (just tilt your head to the right and you'll see it). I prefer a square-ish shape to start out my C's, rather than the rectangle for the U, but that' s personal preference.

Capital O

Oh oh oh! I bet you've already figured out how to make the O. Just one more bit of letter fabric than the C and U. Now I admit to being in something of a rut. I love how it looks when I start with a small background squarish shape and add two narrow l-fabrics and then two really wide ones.

Capital P

P starts with a small u, which gets sewn onto a background strip. Now to actually make it a P, you have to sew a letter strip to the left of the side ways U unit, otherwise you'll be making something else entirely.

Capital R

The capital R starts out the same way the P does, only this time a strip needs to be inserted in the background fabric first. At this stage I was trying to decide whether or not to add some background to the right of the upper bit to make it wider. I decided against it.

I left the longer lower bit alone - may cut that at a slant later.
