Nine Patch Split!
Class Supply List

Approx. Size 49"X49".  Block size: 6"

I made this quilt for my nephew when he was born! Based on a split 9 patch design, these blocks can be placed in numerous designs as with any log cabin block! The ideas are endless!Though the original quilt has been gifted away to a little boy who has loved it and used it to death, I will be bringing a newer/larger version made in different fabrics to the class. We will be focusing on use of the Easy Angle for 1/2 square triangle units, piecing the blocks with rectangles, squares, and 1/2 square triangles, and learning how to do the cornerstone braid borders!

You can make this quilt as big as you want simply by making more blocks!

This version, perfect for quilts of valor, uses 80 blocks  set 8 X 10 for a quilt center that measures 48" X 60" before borders. The choice is yours!
And  a NEW layout...set barn raising in a lap sized quilt that measures 62" X 75"...a great lap size!

Pattern Requirements:

Each student should bring their own directions printed from my website as found here: http://quiltville.com/9patchsplitpf.html

Please be aware of any in your group that might not have access to a printer so everyone has a copy.

Fabric needed:
2 yards assorted dark scraps
2 yards assorted light/neutral scraps.

Quilt center pre-cutting:

Bring these either in 2.5" strips, or if you desire, precut scraps ahead of time  into 2.5" squares and 2.5" X 4.5" bricks. These are common sizes I always keep on hand! The small quilt  with 36 blocks uses 36 2.5" light squares, 36 2.5" dark squares, 36 2.5" X 4.5" light bricks, and 36 2.5" X 4.5" dark bricks. We will be cutting the 1/2 square triangles in class from matched 2.5" strip sets. If making the larger quilt, plan accordingly and increase your yardage.

Accent fabric:  1 1/2yards. In the small quilt, I used a solid red. Choose any color you want, either in a solid, or a tone on tone that reads as a solid.  I also used this fabric for the inner border, and the cornerstones on the braid as well as the binding.  If doing a larger quilt, increase the amount accordingly.

Cornerstone Braid Border:

Bring a large assortment of 2" X 5" rectangles in colors of your choice.  These can be cut from the scraps included in the yardage above. I just went to my 2" strip bin and stacked them and cut them at 5" intervals. It helps to have these cut before class. The number of strips you need varies depending on the size of the quilt you intend to make.  Just bring a good sized stack, about 200 rectangles is enough to get you started!

Cornerstones:
The amount will vary depending on the size of quilt you intend to make. The braid border is optional! I suggest pre-cutting 100 2" squares from your accent fabric before coming to class.

Special Rulers:  This quilt uses the Easy Angle ruler for the 1/2 square triangles. This is a fantastic tool that has improved my quilt making by leaps and bounds! EZ quilting makes the Easy Angle, but there are other brands out there, omni grid, fons & porter, etc..all have one made for 1/2 square triangles.  If you have this ruler and have never learned to use it, now is the time!

General Supplies needed:

Sewing machine in working order (including power cords and extention cords)
Thread, scissors, seam ripper, pins and any other notions you usually sew with.
Rotory cutter, mat and ruler.

Irons and ironing boards should be provided by the guild. Personal pressing items may be okay to use at your workstation as long as the use of power won't trip the circuits in the building leaving the room (or half the room) without power! Please check with your workshop coordinators if mini irons are okay or not.

Looking forward to this workshop with your guild!
